Let’s start with the terms: biodegradable and compostable. We often encounter these terms to describe the disintegration of materials over time in our discourse about Eco-friendly trash disposal. The original item, eventually, loses its shape as the molecular bonds break down. Any plastic material that can be broken down at the molecular level by naturally occurring microorganisms is deemed biodegradable. A compostable designation requires that the biodegradation produces no toxic residue, and that 60% of the material has disintegrated within 180 days.

For bioplastics to properly compost, an industrial composter is required. Keeping regular recyclables separated from bioplastic is necessary to prevent contamination to the regular recycling process.
